Head Coach builds links with Worcester University Futsal Research Programme
Manchester Futsal Club Head Coach Rodrigo Freitas has successfully been offered a place at Worcester University Institute of Sport and Exercise Science where he will undertake his Msc in Sports Coaching as well as play a key part in developing the Brazil-UK Football Development Course. A former student of the University of Sao Paulo, Rodrigo still has many connections with tutors back in his native Brazil that are now lecturing on the course. Rodrigo will use the next 12 months to further his research around futsal coaching which will be of direct benefit to the future direction of Manchester Futsal Club.

“The 2009 Brazil UK Football development course has successfully run for the last two years. Building upon the initial course, the 2008 programme was held in the University of Sao Paulo and I feel the relationships and knowledge base is developing for the benefit of all students of the game. The 2009 programme centres on the development of young players from an international perspective and the content promises to be challenging and thought provoking.” commented Glyn Harding, a Senior Lecturer at Worcester University.

The club has already forged strong links with Worcester University following a trip south back in January when the club took part in a 3 day training camp as part of their pre-season preparation. While they were there the squad was involved in a number of tests and structured exercises that looked at drawing some baseline comparisons between futsal and football techniques.

“I am naturally delighted to be taking up this position as I think it can have a number of benefits for both myself and the club. Worcester University has some excellent facilities as well as informed lecturers which can support and advise how we move Manchester Futsal Club forward in terms of our preparation and performance. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully get the players involved in my research too” said Head Coach Rodrigo Freitas.

“This is an innovative relationship that we are building with Worcester University and demonstrates that we want to be as professional as possible in our approach to developing our players and understanding as much as we can about futsal. We wish Rodrigo the best of luck with his studies and hope that we can support him to move futsal development in the UK forward with his research” announced General Manager Simon Wright.
