MFC 11-1 York: Match reaction

by Aaron Russell

Manchester picked up their first win of the FA National Futsal Super League campaign with a comfortable 11-1 victory over University of York on Sunday.

It took four games, but after disappointing defeats at home to Baltic and Oxford Lions, either side of a hard fought draw at Loughborough, the North champions registered three points to move third in Group ‘A’.

However, MFC lie five points behind second-place Oxford and eight points behind leaders Baltic who have won all four games.

But Ilya Ovechkin believes the victory at weekend can act as a springboard to propel Manchester forward as they aim to collect 18 points from their remaining six games to qualify for the Grand Finals.

“As a team, we’re used to winning and recently results haven’t been going our way,” admitted Ovechkin. “Going back to winning ways is always good; the overall performance was great for the team.

“Everyone played with a high intensity and we controlled the game throughout, which was good to see. We now have to build momentum for our next game and keep pushing until the end.”

Up next for Manchester is a tricky tie away to Helvecia, who sit fourth just one point behind MFC. It is a must-win game for both teams if they are to keep pace with Baltic and Oxford, who face York and Loughborough respectively.

“We will be taking each game at a time and see where it takes us,” continued Ovechkin. “We have competitive games coming up, which will be good for the team, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s always good to win and keep building that momentum. We always believe in our ability and we never doubt ourselves when we’re on the court. The confidence is always there, we just have to make sure we keep getting the right results.”
